Man Drowns While Saving Son At San Luis Pass Bridge

At least 10 people have drowned at the San Luis Pass Bridge Since 2013: Report

GALVESTON, TX — A man drowned Tuesday evening at San Luis Pass while trying to save his 5-year old son who’d been pulled underwater.

According to Galveston Police, the boy went into the water during treacherous swimming conditions and was pulled under by a strong current.

The man, who was identified as Rufino Suarez, 27, went into the water to get the child, and was himself pulled underwater, and drowned, KTRK reported.

This is the second drowning reported ats San Luis Pass in recent weeks.

Jacob Szydlowsk, 19, and and a 17-year old man were fishing near the San Luis Pass Bridge in chest-deep water, when both men were pulled underwater by a strong undertow.

Szydlowsk’s body was recovered the next day.

Since 2013, at least 10 people have drowned near the bridge, KRIV reported.

Meanwhile, the child was pulled out safely, was taken to University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston in unknown condition.
