TABC Investigating Clear Lake Crash That Killed Mom And Baby

HOUSTON, TX — The crash that killed a 36-year old mother and her 3-month old son last week, has piqued the interest of investigators with the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission.
Veronica Rivas, 20, had a blood-alcohol level of .21 when she smashed her SUV into the back of Shayla Joseph's Toyota sedan at about 4 a.m. on Feb. 28.
The force of the crash killed Joseph, and her 3-month old son instantly, and sent Rivas and her 17-year old passenger to the hospital with only minor injuries.

Rivas was taken to the Harris County Jail after the accident,and charged with two counts of intoxication manslaughter.

She was released on bail, and a judge set conditions for her relase that including being placed on house arrest and ordered not to drive any vehicle.
Prosecutors in the case said Rivas left an establishment that served them alcohol, and if that is found to be true, the TABC could take action against the estalisment and the bartender or serve.
Those actions could mean a temporaty suspension of the establishments liquor license, and a civil fine while the serve could face up to an year in jail and a $4,000 fine.
