Woman Charged In Fatal Crash Is Ordered On House Arrest

Veronica Rivas is charged with 2 counts of intoxication manslaughter in the deaths of Shayla Joseph and her son, Braylan Jabari Joseph.

HOUSTON, TX — A 20-year old woman who was arrested on Wednesday and charged with two counts of intoxication manslaughter for causing a crash that killed a 36-year old woman and her 3-month old son was in court on Friday.

Veronica Rivas was behind the wheel of an SUV that smashed into the read end of a Toyota sedan that was driven by Shayla Joseph.

The force of the crash killed Joseph and her 3-month-old son Braylan Jabari Joseph, who was strapped in his carseat.

Rivas and a 17-year old passenger were taken to an area hospital with minor injuries.

Prosecutors said on Friday that Rivas’ blood alcohol level was nearly three times the legal limit at .21.

A judge set Rivas bail at $60,000 and she was placed on house arrest and ordered not to drive a vehicle.

Officials said that Rivas was driving home from an established that served her alcohol, even though she is under 21,KPRC reported..

The establishment, which was not named, could also face charges.
