Tropical Storm Cindy: Galveston County Residents Leave As Storm Moves Inland

Galveston County officials issued a voluntary evacuation order late Tuesday, encouraging some to seek shelter off the island.

GALVESTON, TX — Tropical Storm Cindy is still hours away from making landfall, but residents in Galveston have already been seeing the effects.

Walking the beaches in Galveston has been one of the favorite past times of Colin Thompson. (Want to get daily updates about traffic news and other events going on in your area? Sign up for the free Houston Patch morning newsletter.)

In fact, Thompson, who works in the entertainment industry, has an affinity for shooting videos of sand, surf, and sunsets.

But there was none of that on Wednesday, as the tide was about three feet higher than normal, choppy seas rolled into the shoreline and a stiff wind blew from the southwest as the water swirled up to the steps leading up to the Galveston Seawall.

Normally Thompson, who has lived at Jamaica Beach since 2012, would have been down on the beach on the sand with the seaweed and surf covering his ankles.

But not today.

Cindy was coming.

“It’s about to rain,” Thompson said as he looked out at the sea. “It’s about to go down.”

Thompson, wasn’t going to ride the storm out, opting instead to catch a ride to Florida, weather permitting.

Other residents, particularly those who were ill or elderly, living on Bolivar Peninsula were advised to go starting at noon Wednesday.

Tropical Storm Cindy is projected to make landfall early Thursday near Sabine Pass — 132 miles east of Galveston — yet, the effects are still seen in Galveston and other coastal communities.

High tides washed over some of the Galveston area roadways, as the first bands of Tropical Storm Cindy began to impact coastal areas with gusty winds, but no rain.

One of the areas of concern in Galveston County is Highway 87, on High island on the peninsula, where flood waters are likely to deposit debris and make the roadway impassable, KPRC reported.

Local officials are asking residents to stay indoors and off the roadways if they’ve opted to ride the storm out.

Storm surges between 1-3 feet are expected as the storm continues to move northward.
