Alcohol-free zones near McKinney ISD sites soon to be extended
McKinney ISD Board of Trustees has approved a petition to extend the alcohol-free zone around district property from 300 feet to 1,000 feet

In recent years, there has been growing concern about the dangers of selling alcohol near schools, particularly for young students and adolescents. Dozens of researches have confirmed that exposure to alcohol at a young age can have serious long-term consequences, including an increased risk of alcoholism and other substance abuse disorders.
Given these concerns, many communities and policymakers have been working to restrict the sale of alcohol near schools and other areas where children and teenagers are likely to congregate. While some may argue that such restrictions infringe on the rights of business owners, the evidence suggests that they are an important step towards protecting the health and safety of young people.
Currently, businesses that operate in the area of 300 feet or less of McKinney ISD sites are not allowed to sell alcohol, but this might soon change for good. The McKinney Independent School District (ISD) Board of Trustees has unanimously approved a petition to extend the alcohol-free zone around district property. According to the petition, the 300 feet alcohol-free zone will be extended to 1,000 feet.

In the event that the petition is granted approval, a ban would be imposed on the sale of alcoholic beverages within a radius of 1,000 feet surrounding district property, encompassing not only educational institutions such as school campuses, but also all other district-owned assets, including administrative edifices, libraries, and athletic fields.
In conformity with the Texas Alcoholics Beverage Code, the Commissioners Court is empowered to promulgate ordinances that regulate the dispensation of alcoholic beverages within a range of 300 feet from a church, public or private school, or public hospital. In the event that the board of trustees advances a petition to the court, the alcohol-free zone may be expanded to encompass a perimeter of 1,000 feet from a public school.

McKinney ISD says that the petition is in correlation with the district’s commitment to keeping everyone in those areas healthy and safe. This primarily applies to students, but also teachers, school staff and visitors. The school district further confirmed that the petition is in compliance with the Texas Alcoholics Beverage Code and will be submitted to Collin County Commissioners for consideration. If accepted, the district will adopt and enforce the ordinance immediately.
