DENTON, Texas — In a moment of unparalleled honor, the University of North Texas (UNT) played host to the prestigious Opal Lee, universally recognized as the "Grandmother of Juneteenth," as she joined the jubilations of the graduating class this past weekend, DallasMetro.news said in a recent report.

At an inspiring 96 years of age, Lee, who hails from Marshall, Texas, was bestowed with an honorary doctorate degree during the Spring Commencement ceremonies held on Sunday, a testament to her outstanding contributions to society and her enduring commitment to education.

Lee is no stranger to the halls of UNT, with her academic journey at the institution culminating in the attainment of a Master of Education back in 1963. A retired educator, Lee's influence extends far beyond the classroom, with her instrumental role in the campaign to nationalize the observance of Juneteenth.

In a remarkable display of determination and symbolic gesture, Lee embarked on a journey in 2016 that saw her walking a distance of two and a half miles in cities across the nation. This was no ordinary journey, but rather a potent symbol of the two and a half long years it took for news of their emancipation to reach all enslaved individuals.

As the footsteps of this tireless advocate echoed across the country, Lee was soon joined by crowds of supporters, their collective strides resonating with a shared commitment to honoring the past and working towards a more equitable future. These powerful walks significantly contributed to the historical moment in 2021 when President Joe Biden put pen to paper, signing into law a bill that officially recognized Juneteenth as a federal holiday.

The year 2022 saw Lee's tireless efforts recognized on an international scale, as she was nominated for the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize. Her commendable service to the community was further recognized in February when the Texas Senate paid tribute to her leadership and enduring legacy. A portrait of Lee was unveiled at the Capitol, a fitting tribute to a woman whose tireless dedication to equality and education continues to inspire and influence generations.
