The Texas Department of Transportation Dallas recognized the anniversary of the ribbon cutting of the final section of I-30 Canyon in 1966 on Tuesday.

TxDOT posted to social media about the anniversary on Tuesday. "On this day in 1966, state and local officials joined TxDOT to cut the ribbon on the final section of the I-30 Canyon," the post reads. "This was a huge milestone, connecting east Dallas to the Mixmaster."

As the post notes, the corridor is currently undergoing improvements. According to the I-30 Canyon Improvement Project fact sheet, the project will reconfigure the existing I-30 corridor between the I-35E and I-45 interchanges in Dallas.

This area has been identified as a top congestion corridor by the Texas Clear Lanes initiatives. Improvements will provide more efficient traffic mobility in the downtown area, as well as increased safety enhancements.

Key improvements include reconstruction and widening of the I-30 main lanes from six to 12; increasing the weave lengths between interchanges; redesign of cross streets to provide safer bike and pedestrian accommodations; rail crossing improvements; and potential decking opportunities to be completed by other agencies.

The project length is 2.3 miles, the contractor is Balfour Beatty Infrastructure, Inc., and the total cost is projected to be $888 million. TxDOT anticipates daily traffic in 2045 to be 234,500 vehicles. And the project is expected to be completed in 2031.

Drivers should plan ahead for extra travel time or seek alternate routes during the construction period. Be alert to crews and equipment along the corridor, heed all work zone signs, and be alert to slower traffic and give full attention to the work zone.

Scheduled lane and ramp closures will be announced at www.DriveTexas.org. Detours can be expected during bridge work on city streets above I-30.
