AUSTIN, TX — Dressbarn, the women's clothing chain launched in the 1960s where customers "could find fashion at a value," is closing all its 650 stores nationwide, including two in Austin, company officials announced this week.

Ascena Retail Group officials broke the news of the mass closures late Monday, saying the closures will tighten their focus on its more profitable brands. An exact closing date for the stores has not been provided. The chain has two Dressbarn stores in Austin at 5601 Brodie Lane and at The Shops at Arbor Walk, 10515 N Mopac Expressway.

In a prepared statement, Dressbarn CEO Steven Taylor categorized the decision to close the chain as a "difficult" one to make. However, the lack of substantive profits derived from the stores made the decision to close necessary, he added.

"For more than 50 years, Dressbarn has served women’s fashion needs, and we thank all of our dedicated associates for their commitment to Dressbarn and our valued customers," Taylor said. "This decision was difficult, but necessary, as the Dressbarn chain has not been operating at an acceptable level of profitability in today’s retail environment."

Dressbarn stores will continue to operate as usual for the time being as the company prepares their closures, Taylor added: "During the wind down process, we will continue to provide our customers with the same great experience both in-store and online, offering them even better deals and value. We will work to assist our associates through the transition and maintain existing relationships with our vendors, suppliers, and other key stakeholders through this process.”

In a separate statement, Dressbarn officials characterized the closures as "...another significant step taken to advance Ascena's ongoing transformation." The New Jersey-based women's retailer also owns Ann Taylor, LOFT, Lane Bryant, Lou & Grey, Catherines, Cacique and Justice. The company sold its Maurice brand earlier this month.
