Austin Police ID man killed riding scooter on MoPac (mysanantonio.com) — A deadly early-morning scooter and vehicle crash shut down northbound MoPac in Austin for about five hours on Wednesday, August 26, and police have now identified the man who died. Austin police say the scooter rider was traveling against traffic when he collided with a driver who tried to avoid him, marking the city's 54th traffic death of 2026 as investigators continue to seek additional information.
   

2. Austin City Council to develop regulations addressing mold in rental housing (kvue.com) — Austin City Council has unanimously launched the process to write the city's first specific rules for mold inspections and cleanup in rental housing, responding to widespread complaints from renters. The resolution directs staff to define when mold is a violation, set inspection and remediation standards, and work with tenants, landlords, and advocates before bringing draft rules back in 2027.
   

3. Austin Made Jalapeno Ranch Dressing Sold Since April Is Recalled Because Eggs Never Appeared on the Label (medicaldaily.com) — If you shop Central Market or independent grocers in Austin, check your fridge for Jaime's Spanish Village Jalapeno Ranch made by Austin-based Jaime's Foods ATX, now recalled for undeclared egg. Six specific lot numbers of the 16-ounce jars may pose a serious risk to people with egg allergies, though no illnesses are reported. Locals are urged to verify lot codes, stop using affected jars, and return or discard them.
   

4. Austin City Council grants historic landmark zoning to Bethany Cemetery (cbsaustin.com) — Austin City Council has officially granted historic landmark zoning to Bethany Cemetery in East Austin, adding long-sought protection for one of the city's oldest Black burial grounds. The designation recognizes the cemetery's role in preserving stories of Black Austinites and aims to rally more community support for its ongoing maintenance as development pressures reshape the area.
   

5. Texas Archeology Fair to kick off archeology month (crossroadstoday.com) — Austin families can mark their calendars for a free Texas Archeology Fair on Saturday, Sept. 26, at the Texas Science & Natural History Museum on the UT Austin campus. Hosted with the Texas Historical Commission, the fair offers hands-on activities, exhibits, and chances to meet archeologists, tribal representatives, and historians. It also kicks off Texas Archeology Month with extra online resources and a free pinch-pot kit.
