Austin-Area Weekend Guide For Oct. 12-14, 2018

There's a little music festival at Zilker Park they call ACL Fest, but there are also other fun things to do throughout the weekend.

AUSTIN, TEXAS — Not a weekend goes by in Austin without fun things to do. It's one of the nice things about living in the glimmering state capital. This weekend is no different, as you'll see in the list of things to do that follows. There's something for every conceivable taste.

Zilker Park is the setting for ACL Fest, with a dizzying array of artists taking the stage through Sunday, Oct. 14. This is weekend two of the festival before it packs up until next year. GHOSTBUSTERS SCREENING

Community First! Village Ampitheatre, 9301 Hog Eye Rd.

Mobile Loaves & Fishes invites you to a free movie night at their Community First! Village. Grab chairs and a blanket, bring family and friends, and enjoy this special screening. Come explore Community First! Village, pick your spot, and enjoy your favorite movie snacks from the Community Grille. Burgers, french fries, snacks, and drinks will be available for purchase (cards and cash accepted!). The event is free, however a $5 donation would be highly appreciated. Donations can be made electronically when RSVPing to this event. Organizers encourage attendees to support their Community Grille rather than bringing outside food and drinks. Dress in weather-appropriate clothing and don’t forget your flashlights and bug spray. Organizers also recommend wearing closed-toe shoes. Dogs on leashes are welcome at Community Cinema movie nights. Free, but $5 donation recommended.

SATURDAY, OCT. 13

CEDAR BARK FESTIVAL

Veterans Memorial Park, 2525 W. New Hope Dr., Cedar Park

At this family-friendly event, dog owners will be able to converge from noon to 2:30 p.m. and partake in a pet costume contest or an owner/pet look-alike contest. Sign-up begins at noon, and each contest is limited to 20 participants. Proceeds benefit Friends of Cedar Bark Park, a volunteer organization that improves the park through maintenance, service projects and donations for new additions. Free.

PARQUET COURTS WITH SASS

Mohawk, 912 Red River St.

Parquet Courts is slated to play at ACL this year, but first they'll play the night before at Mohawk. For their most recent album, the garage-punk band joined forced with producer Danger Mouse with rather electrifying, head-bouncing-toe-tapping results. But don't take our word for it; check out the video below. Doors open at 9:30 p.m., show at 10:30 p.m. Cost: $23.

INDEPENDENCE BREWING CO. 14TH ANNIVERSARY PARTY

Indie Brewery, 3913 Todd Lane, Suite 607,

Throughout the night, the Independence Brewing Co. will be tapping 14 different kegs of special pilot brews and core variants. Plus, there will be live music by Guy Forsyth. The party is FREE and open to the public, but a $14 ticket can be purchased to reserve your commemorative glass + 3 beers. Glasses are limited so you might want to try to reserve yours now. For tickets, click here. Music will play between 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The event runs from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.

The folks at Independence Brewing offer a few things to note:

— The theme of the party is "14-karat gold" so bust out your gold onesie.

— No dogs allowed at this event for their safety. However, they sell dogs toys if you want to give your home-bound pet a souvenir.
— This event if family friendly.
— Parking is extremely limited so attendees are encouraged to use a rideshare service.
— Rain or shine because "...we don't need no sunny skies to get down."

SUNDAY, OCT. 14

BACKYARD STORY NIGHT: OCTOBER IN THE COUNTRY

20326 FM 969 UNIT 2, Webberville, Texas

This story night's a little bit off the beaten path, at a farmhouse 19 miles east of Austin in Webberville. Come early to grab a seat but stories will begin right at 8 p.m., organizers wrote on the event page. "Bring food and drinks to share with friends and come join a for a small intimate night of stories out under the stars!" organizers continue. There's plenty of parking available. This story time is patterned after the NPR series, The Moth. "If you've been on the fence for years about wanting to tell a story--this is the one! We would love for you to join the hundreds of wonderful folks that have shared their stories with us over the last several years. Anyone can tell a story--it just needs to be under 6 minutes time." Event starts at 7 p.m., and is hosted by John Brewster and Meg Mattingly.

EAST AUSTIN MAKERS MARKET

1906 E. Cesar Chavez St.

Austin Makers Collective is hosting a new makers market every Sunday at 1906 E Cesar Chavez. Come out and shop from an amazing group of local artists, makers, vintage collectors and creative entrepreneurs. This is a weekly outdoor market that launched Sept. 9. Hosted by Austin Makers Collective, this event runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
