📰 News we're reading

1. Inside an Austin cooling center helping people escape the heat (statesman.com) — If you're struggling with Austin's brutal summer heat, Trinity Center Austin runs a cooling center in St. David's Episcopal Church's basement with AC, meals, showers, and help replacing documents. Funded initially by the city and now sustained by the nonprofit, it also needs volunteers to support daytime rest programs and other services for neighbors experiencing homelessness.

2. Several agencies respond to fire that burned at least 10 acres (cbsaustin.com) — Firefighters from multiple agencies quickly contained a 10- to 15-acre brush fire near Austin Executive Airport along SH 130, but crews are staying on scene to mop up hot spots. Officials are also urging Austinites to be extra careful with outdoor cooking and any spark-producing activities around dry vegetation, especially after a separate deadly shooting in Northeast Austin the same day.

3. Austin races to regulate AI data centers before they strain city water and power (wheninyourstate.com subscription) — Austin leaders are moving quickly to write new zoning and utility rules for large AI data centers before any hyperscale campus connects to the city's grid or water system. Proposed changes would classify data centers by size, restrict where they can locate, and require detailed plans on energy, water, noise, and lighting. With ERCOT facing massive new power requests, Austin aims to protect local resources without offering incentives to these projects.

4. Police investigating after man found dead in vehicle in East Austin (statesman.com) — Austin police are investigating a deadly crash in East Austin where a man was found with traumatic injuries inside a vehicle that hit a fence near Woodland Avenue and Burton Drive. Officers are treating the case as the city's 38th homicide of 2026 and are searching for a young Hispanic man who left before they arrived. Detectives are interviewing witnesses and asking residents to share any tips with APD or Crime Stoppers.

5. Father asks public for help finding son missing in Austin for three weeks (fox7austin.com) — Austin police and volunteers are intensifying the search for 30-year-old Alexander Bangert, missing since August 9 after his work truck was found abandoned in northwest Austin with his belongings inside. His father is commuting from San Antonio to canvass greenbelts and apartments, while Texas EquuSearch joins APD in organized searches. Anyone with tips is urged to contact Austin police or Texas EquuSearch.
