Austin Has Nation's 6th Fastest Rent Growth: Report

Apartment List researchers found rents in Austin grew 3.1 percent over the past year compared to national 1.4 percent growth rate.

AUSTIN, TX — A newly released report confirms to something of which Austin apartment dwellers are painfully aware: Rents in Austin are increasing with no signs of letting up.

Apartment List has released its January rent report, showing Austin to have experienced the 6th-fastest year-over-year rent growth. Here are other highlights:

  • Rents in Austin are up 3.1 percent over the past year, landing on the 6th spot among the nation's largest cities. For comparison, researchers noted the national rent index grew by just 1.4 percent over the past year.
  • Since 2014, rents in Austin have grown by 15.9 percent, outpacing the national average of 11.3 percent.
  • The median rent for a 2-bedroom apartment in Austin is currently $1,471 compared to the national average of $1,192.
