Austin Motorcyclist Dies After Being Struck By Car

Scott Remmenga, 54, was riding his bike along Highway 290 service road when a driver trying to turn left from the wrong lane hit him.

AUSTIN, TX — A motorcyclist died after a wrong-way driver struck him while attempting a left turn from the wrong lane last weekend, police detailed on Thursday.

The incident occurred on Friday, Sept. 13, just before 9 a.m. along the westbound Highway 290 service road at Parmer Lane, police said in a press advisory. Scott Remmenga, 54, was riding a Honda Silverwing motorcycle traveling westbound on the service road when the driver of a white, 2016 Toyota Tundra traveling parallel to the bike attempted to turn left from the wrong lane before striking the motorcyclist.

Remmenga was transported to Dell Seton Medical Center, where he died a short time later. Police noted the driver of the Tundra remained at the scene to cooperate in a police investigation. It was unclear what charges the driver might face as a result of the deadly collision.

The incident marked Austin’s 59th fatal traffic crash of 2019, police said, resulting in 61 fatalities this year. During the comparable period last year, police noted, there were 50 fatal traffic crashes and 51 traffic fatalities.

The incident was the second time in as many days that a motorcyclist died along Highway 290. Two days before Remmenga was killed, another motorcyclist on a red, 2001 Harley Davidson died after failing to negotiate a curve before striking a wall. The Sept. 11 incident occurred at Highway 290 westbound at the Highway 183 flyover, according to a police advisory.

There, Joe Ogg, 41, went over the wall after slamming into it following his attempt to negotiate a curve, falling into the westbound lanes below, police said. Ogg was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.
