Austin Is The Nation's 9th Hardest-Working City: Report

With Employee Appreciation Day right around the corner, researchers ranked which cities work the hardest. See where your city landed.

AUSTIN, TX — With Employee Appreciation Day right around the corner on March 6, researchers at WalletHub sought to identify 2020’s Hardest-Working Cities in America. Spoiler alert: Austin emerged as the 9th hardest-working municipality.

In compiling its list, researchers compared the 116 largest cities across 11 key metrics. The data set ranges from employment rate to average hours worked per week to share of workers with multiple jobs.

  • 14th – Avg. Workweek Hours
  • 52nd – Avg. Commute Time
  • 15th – Employment Rate
  • 5th – Share of Households Where No Adults Work
  • 59th – Annual Volunteer Hours per Resident
  • 45th – Avg. Leisure Time Spent per Day

In a state known for its pioneering, get-it-done spirit, Texas was well represented on the list, with four cities other than Austin cracking the top ten among the most hard-working. The Dallas suburb of Irving emerged as the nation's 5th hardest-working, while Corpus Christi and Plano landed on the 7th and 10th slots, respectively.

Dallas had a respectable showing in the 13th position, while Fort Worth, Arlington, Houston and Garland fell behind in the 17th, 21st, 24th and 26th positions. Laredo was 37th, El Paso was 50th and San Antonio was 53rd, according to the study. Lagging behind was Lubbock (67th).

So which city emerged as the nation's hardest-working? The honor goes to Anchorage, Alaska. The least-working city? That dubious distinction goes to Detroit.
