Austin PD IDs Man Who Died After Being Tased
Law enforcement officials said the 41-year-old was trespassing and grew combative with officers before dying in a hospital after bein tased.
AUSTIN, TX — Police on Wednesday identified the man who died while in police custody one week ago after being tased late last month.
The incident dates to March 31, when police were dispatched to a home along the 800 block of West Slaughter Lane in South Austin amid a report of a trespasing. The complainant told police her children's father was acting strangely while refusing to leave the premises.
Police learned the 41-year-old man had previously been issued a criminal trespass notice on March 6, prompting officers to attempt an arrest. The man grew combative, according to the officers' claims, prompting one of them to deploy a Taser. Once handcuffed, the man experienced an unspecified "medical emergency," according to the police account.

Despite arriving medics' life-saving measures, the man died a short time later after being admitted to a hospital. On Wedneday, police identified him as Enrique Quiroz, born on March 12, 1979.

The two officers involved — one with two years on the force and another with four — have been placed on desk duty per standard protocol during such incidents, according to an Austin Police Deparment press release. "The names of the two officers on administrative duty will be released in the near future," the news release read.
