AUSTIN, TEXAS — The Austin Film Festival is in its waning days until tomorrow, yet there are still various compelling independent movies to be screened today. The 25th annual version of the gathering kicked off on Friday, drawing thousands of film mavens to the capital city.

Laugh or Die
8:00 PM AT GALAXY HIGHLAND SCREEN 9
In 1918 Finland after the Civil War, Toivo Parikka, the famous actor of the Workers’ Theatre, is caught and sent to a prison camp where his remaining comrades languish on the verge of death. Parikka defies execution by cracking jokes in front of the squad and getting a laugh out of the guards. Seeing this, Captain Kalm, the camp commandant gives Parikka and unexpected offer: if the actor and his fellow captives can put on an entertaining play for his German guests, they will be spared. At first, 'C' could not remember—she was 11 when it happened. C was raped in her New Jersey elementary school by another 11-year-old student. After being denied justice and resolution, C is determined to share her story. The film uses C's drawings and poetry to illustrate and animate her inner life and what it means for a child to live after trauma.

An Indian-American family must grapple with a new reality when their high-achieving son drops out of college and returns home a different person than when he left. His parents are unable to accept or admit that their son is now struggling with mental illness, and with his condition worsening, his younger sister, still in high school and reckoning with her own future, takes it upon herself to rescue him.

At first it appears he returns to his former self but through a series of painful flashbacks and encounters, he comes to learn of the dark and disturbing events that led to his beating. Ashamed to learn of the person he has become – and the dangerous world he became mixed up in – Stevie realizes he will have to pay. But at what price?
