Fire Breaks Out At Convenience Store Across UT-Austin

AUSTIN, TX — Firefighters responded to the 1900 block of Guadalupe Street on Monday evening to extinguish a fire at a convenience store across from the University of Texas at Austin.

The emergency call came alerting to the fire came in just before 7:40 p.m. at the rear portion of a 7-11 convenience store located across the street from the McCombs School of Business.The Austin Fire Department said on Twitter that the rear of the structure, utilities and a wooden fence have sustained damage as a result of the conflagration.

Although fire officials reported just before 8 p.m. the blaze had been extinguished, the fire resulted in power outages at the convenience store and an adjacent Papa Johns pizza eatery. Austin Energy crews arrived to repair the power lines while fire investigators were at the scene trying to determine the cause of the blaze.

The aftermath of the fire impacted drivers in the area as southbound Guadalupe Street was closed to accommodate fire investigators' work and site cleanup.

Patch went to the scene, witnessing considerable road congestion and southbound city buses lined up motionless waiting to pass amid the snail-like pace of traffic. Police cars were dispatched to the scene to help block off traffic, their emergency light giving drivers a heads up to the blockage ahead of them.

No injuries were reported. Patch will update when more details are known.
