Combining Texas traditions of floating down the river and live music, festival had a positive impact on the regional economy, survey says.

AUSTIN, TEXAS — Talk about your liquid assets: A newly released economic impact study found that Float Fest, the only festival in the world combining the Texas tradition of floating the river and live music, found the event generated a $12.3 million impact on the region.

Staged in San Marcos, Texas, just outside San Antonio, the study by Angelou Economics analyzed festival operations and attendee expenditures in Travis, Guadalupe and Hays counties. Among the study's highlights:

  • Float Fest generated an estimated $12.3 million total economic impact for San Marcos and the surrounding region.
  • Float Fest attendees occupied an estimated 46 percent of hotel rooms available in San Marcos.
  • The festival is responsible for an estimated 119 full-time job equivalents.
  • It is estimated that more than $4.2 million in labor income was paid to employees as a result of Float Fest.
  • The state of Texas collected an estimated $621,200 in sales tax revenues, while Guadalupe County collected an estimated $49,500.

“We were thrilled with the study’s findings and seeing how much we are truly impacting our community,” said Marcus Federman, founder of Float Fest. “We love the San Marcos community and happy to see we are a positive impact in the region.”
