Fun Things To Do In Austin Jan. 11-13, 2019

AUSTIN, TEXAS — The weekend is finally here, and it's time to do your happy dance in jubilation. It's also time to start planning your recreational activities, of which opportunities abound.

If old-school hip hop, classic funk and boogie are your thing, then you'll be like a kid at a candy store at this dance party. Here's how organizers describe what will go down: "No cover, free parking, delicious drinks, a chill outdoor patio, free vinyl giveaways, and a ridiculous sound system is all how the Get Down goes down." We couldn't have said it better ourselves. For those wanting a drink, the outside bar (now accepting credit/debit cards) will be in full swing "...for the fastest booze procurement possible," organizers promise.
Your hosts / DJs for the evening will be: DJ R.O.C.K.M.A.N. (Vincent Banks); Kaosyn (Jimmy Ornelas); Boogie Bones (Robbie Pryor); Squake (Gino Squake); Vincent Lilly (Eleven Dash One); and MC Lil Mike. The event is free with no cover for those 21 and up. Organizers note there is a suggested donation at the door, but it's "completely optional," they add.
Bullock Texas State History Museum, 1800 Congress Ave.
Those with a penchant for Texas history and love of trivia games might make a beeline to the Bullock Museum, where they can test their knowledge of all things Texana. Topics cover not only history, but contemporary categories covering movies and music. Word on the street is there will be complimentary food and drink for participants. The event is scheduled from 6 p..m. to 8 p.m., and the cost is free.
SATURDAY, JAN. 12
Spider House Ballroom, 2908 Fruth St.
KOOP Radio is turning 24 years old this weekend with a bash befitting the milestone. Scheduled to be on hand will be The Wagoneers & blues phenoms Peterson Brothers Band plus an intimate VIP-only pre-show with Monte Warden and The Dangerous Few. Tickets on sale now include general admission at $20 and VIP priced at $50. The latter includes an intimate, seated concert with Monte Warden & The Dangerous Few, an artist-signed poster, one-of-a=kind Birthday Bash T-shirt screen printed live on-site by Fine Southern Gentlemen, KOOP swag and more.
The party schedule is as follows:
- 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.: VIP reception and seated concert with Monte Warden & The Dangerous Few.
- 7 p.m.: GA Doors
- 7:30 p.m.: The Peterson Brothers
- 9 p.m.: The Wagoneers

Now in its 10th year, BowiElvis Fest is an annual party thrown by Lone Star Beer and Splice Records TX celebrating the birthdays of David Bowie and Elvis Presley. "The Fest is a fashionable tribute that is all about the preservation of Rock n Roll!" organizers wrote on the Facebook evnts page. "Lineup: Showcasing Brian Scartocci and Pecos Hank Schyma, the lovable Swimwear Department (doing the Labyrinth soundtrack in full costume), and the one man funk collective Henry + The Invisibles. Music fans young and old are welcome to come dance and celebrate the birth of two fallen rock legends on their birthday."
Activities for the nostalgia-filled evening include face painting, Elvis/Bowie games, costume contest, prizes, food concessions. Participants are encouraged to come in costume toward winning a prize. The event starts at 7 p.m. "...and the party ends when the music can go no more (around 1-2 in the am)," organizers wrote. Admission runs from $15 for general admission to $95 for a reserved table seating eight people. All ages welcome.
The Butterfly Bar Austin, 2307 Manor Rd.
This is a BYOD (Bring Your Own Dog) event, staged for canine lovers and their furry companions. The Butterfly at The Vortex is staging this event with masquerade masks, New Year's bingo, and "Woof Clicquot" champagne starting at 6 p.m. "Dress to impress and wear your most elaborate mask!" organizers advise. Dogs, too, are highly encouraged to wear masks, organizers added. "This will be a pawty that you don't want to miss!" they said. RSVP required, $10 general admission for non-BYOD members. Cavalier Queers is an alternative drag brunch hosted by Austin locals Rhonda Jewels & Mandy Quinn. The event offers food and drink specials during what organizers describe as a "raunchy & raucous" time. How raucous you ask? We're talking chicken & waffles and cocktails. Reservations recommended via GetSpicy@theCavalierATX.com. "For this special one-time event, we will be taking reservations for table service (instead of our usual first come, first served counter service)," organizers noted on the Facebook event page. From noon to 2 p.m.
Ballet Austin, Butler Center for Dance & Fitness, 501 W. 3rd St.
"Every day is a good day to make healthy choices, but January is the perfect time to renew and revive your health and fitness goals...especially when it's FREE!" organizers wrote on the Facebook event page. Make plans to attend GET FIT on Jan. 13 and kick off the new year inspired, motivated toward beginning or maintaining a healthier lifestyle. Sample a variety of fitness, dance fitness, and conditioning classes, try the Pilates reformer, learn more about living healthy, visit with local health and wellness experts in our exhibit area, sample healthy foods, listen to presentations from experts in the field. But above all, have fun.

Television actors Thomas Middleditch (Silicon Valley) and Ben Schwartz (Parks and Recreation, House of Lies) will perform two-person, long-form improv at the Paramount much to the delight of their fans. Tickets range from $29 to $49. Show starts at 9:30 p.m. For tickets,click here.
