Waterloo Music Festival, Long Center 10th birthday bash, Michael Nesmith in concert and a bourbon launch scheduled this weekend.

AUSTIN, TEXAS — We're sorry to see summer ebbing away, but also grateful for the end of oppressive heat that included a streak of triple-digit-temperature days. The point is, the weather is delightful for weekend fun. And there's plenty of that, as ever, in Austin.

Waterloo Music Festival

Waterloo Music Festival is a new independent jam music and camping festival to be staged Sept. 7-9, 2018, at Carson Creek Ranch in Austin, Texas. The festival will feature three full days of nationally renowned jam bands performing alongside the city's finest musical acts during a weekend of camping, organizers said.
The event will take place at Carson Creek Ranch, a venue just ten minutes from downtown Austin with over 60 acres of Pecan-tree-lined campgrounds and scenic views from the banks of the Colorado River. Acclaimed independent jam band The String Cheese Incident will headline the event, playing for all three nights of the festival. For tickets, visit waterloofest.com.

A key component of Austin’s film scene, AGLIFF — the oldest running LGBTQ+ Film Festival in the Southwest — centers on gender, lifestyles, and identities with hard-to-find cinematic offerings you might be hard-pressed to find elsewhere. More than 100 thoughtful films will be screened depicting myriad issues exploring the themes of age, class, culture, expression, gender identity, race, and religion. The app to be launched at this event seeks to connect you with the finer things in life: Cocktails, a braid bar, balloon artist, VR, live painting and so much more. Musical entertainment will be on hand, including DJ Girlfriend, Interrobang, Ladyfang, Swimming with Bears and Sydney Wright. This event starts at 8 p.m. and continues through 2 a.m. Free.

Garrison Brothers Present Bourbon and Boots

Garrison Brothers is celebrating the launch of its new Boot Flask Bourbon from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The distillery's award-winning small batch bourbon is now sold in a 375 ml bottle ergonomically designed to fit snugly the calf area of your favorite pair of boots. Lucchese and Pinto Ranch have been chosen as patron partners to keep the theme going for the release. Music, passed hors-d’oeuvre and our Garrison Brothers' famed Bourbon Evangelists will be passing out delicious bourbon samples. Admission is free.

Saturday, Sept. 8 (through Sunday)

Staple! Independent Media Expo

The two-day lineup of events, workshops and family-friendly activities at the Millennium Youth Entertainment Complex in East Austin. Programming highlights include a live art show benefit, seven educational panels and an on-site Kid's Zone presented by the Pflugerville Public Library. Now in its 14th year, the annual event features more than 200 exhibitors showcasing independently made comics, zines, art and games. Visitors can interact with artists and attend panels on topics including "Paying Your Bills with Comics," featuring Ngozi Ukazu, Madeline Rupert and Gaby Epstein; "You Can Draw in 30 Minutes," a family-friendly workshop led by Mark Kistler; and "The Secret History of Marvel's Underground Comix" with comic book historian Kevin Garcia. Entrance to all panel discussions is included with general admission tickets.

This year, 15 students from the Mexican American Cultural Center's (MACC) Caminos program–an immersive paid fellowship empowering Austin-area teens to carve their own path in the creative arts – will be exhibitors with an artist table at the expo. These young participants have been creating a 24-page zine which focuses on issues surrounding inclusion, identity, family, tradition and belonging, and Latino youth experiences in a design workshop mentored by NAVA, the editor of Latino Toons, officials noted.

STAPLE! The Independent Media Expo will take place Millennium Youth Entertainment Complex located at 1156 Hargrave St. Hours for the two-day expo are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8 and noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 9. Tickets are available at the door; one-day passes are $10 and two-day passes are $15. Students and military personnel are eligible for a discounted $10 two-day pass with a valid ID. The event is free for kids 12 and younger.

Eastside Kings Blues Fest (through Sunday)

East 12th & Chicon

This is a festival many in the mainstream might not have heard of, but a well-kept secret for the musical cognoscenti. Blues artists from throughout the world descend to East Austin with two days' worth of performances on various stages and present workshops. Get your wristbands at Antone's. Cost: $10.

R-E-S-P-E-C-T The Queens Dance Party Tribute To The Ladies Of Soul

With the recent passing of late, great Aretha Franklin, this event is perfect for paying your respects as she would've liked. Along the way, danced tribute will be made to other ladies of soul: Tina Turner, Amy Winehouse and, naturally, Bey herself — the irreplaceable (do you see what we did there?) Beyoncé Knowles. Fierce female DJs will spin, including DJ Kay Cali and DJ Jeska. Cost: Free with RSVP (before 11 p.m.) to $5.

Michael Nesmith & The First National Band In Concert

The former member of the Monkees will perform some of his classic songs, including "Different Drum," "Listen to the Band" and "Silver Moon" in a night sure to stir nostalgia. The Long Center 10th Birthday Bash

The Long Center for the Performing Arts

The landmark venue will celebrate its birthday with a free day of activities, music and more fun on the grounds. Grupo Fantasma will provide the live music. The Who's Tommy

Celebrate this timeless rock opera that spawned the very term from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in an intimate theater setting in East Austin. With a $20 admission, this offering is much more accessible than snagging a high-priced ticket when the Broadway show rolls into town from time to time. If you haven't seen this musical, prepare for a real experience watching this play that garnered five Tony awards and numerous other accolades. The Who's Tommy (for those few who may not know) is a rock musical with music and lyrics by Pete Townshend and book by him and Des McAnuff based on the Who's 1969 rock opera Tommy. So rock on, denizens! Cost: $20.
