Miss Texas Slams President Trump's Charlottesville Response In Just 15 Seconds

Margana Wood, 22, was asked if she agreed with Trump that both sides of the protests in Charlottesville, Va. were to blame for violence.

AUSTIN, TX — An Austin woman—who happens to be Miss Texas—has created quite a national stir after denouncing Donald Trump on live national television for himself not denouncing white supremacists strongly enough.

Recent University of Texas at Austin graduate Margana Wood, 22, earned viral fame after her response to a question during the Q&A portion of the Miss America pageant on Sunday night. Wood was asked whether she agreed with Trump that people on both sides of the protests were to be blamed equally for the violent outcome that ended in the death of a counter-protester last month.

"I think that the white supremacist issue, it was very obvious that it was a terrorist attack," Wood responded. "And I think that President Donald Trump should have made a statement earlier addressing the fact, and making sure all Americans feel safe in this country, that is the number one issue right now."

In the immediate aftermath of the violence when a white supremacist (one of many protesting the removal of a Robert E. Lee statue) rammed his car into a group of counter-protesters, killing a young woman.

But in the immediate aftermath of the tragedy, Trump categorized the incident as an “egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides.” It was that qualifying "on many sides" that earned widespread criticism, as Trump failed to condemn the white nationalists or neo-Nazis who had organized the protest. The "many sides" qualifier appeared to be an ad-lib as Trump was clearly reading a prepared statement on a TelePrompter before uttering the line in a sudden change of delivery.

The day after the attack in Charlottesville, Trump doubled down on blaming "many sides" for the violence: “You had a group on one side that was bad," he said. "You had a group on the other side that was also very violent. Nobody wants to say that. I’ll say it right now.” He then defended the gathering of white nationalists protesting the statue removal, saying it included "some very fine people."

Wood expressed the view many feel that Trump should've been more critical of white supremacists, transforming herself into a social media star in the process. While she came in fourth place overall, she managed a top stop for dissenters everywhere.
