George W. Bush And Joe Biden To Join President Obama In Dallas Tuesday

Dallas, TX — President Barack Obama is expected to be in Dallas at the mayor's invitation Tuesday to deliver remarks during a memorial service for the five officers killed there.

In a media advisory released on Sunday, the White House confirmed Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings has asked the president to speak during an interfaith service with the families of the fallen Dallas Police Department officers and community members. The five officers were killed during a gunman's shooting rampage on Thursday during what began as a peaceful rally calling attention to recent deaths of black men at the hands of police.

The memorial service is scheduled at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center, the White House confirmed. Vice President Joe Biden will accompany the president at the memorial to be also attended by former president George W. Bush and former First Lady Laura Bush, who live in the Dallas area. First Lady Michelle Obama also will be in attendance.

The president will commiserate with family members of the deceased in offering his condolences to them personally, the advisory noted.

"He will also meet privately with the families of the fallen police officers and those who were injured to personally express the nation's support and gratitude for their service and sacrifice," the White House advisory reads.

Even before news of the mayor's invitation came to light, Obama planned to visit Dallas to offer his support. As news of the tragedy reached him, he cut short his attendance at a key NATO meeting in Warsaw, Poland, in order to prepare for the Dallas trip.
