Fewer students, too many schools: Communities confront closures and consolidations (highlandcountypress.com) — Austin ISD has voted to close and consolidate 10 schools starting in the 2026-27 year, a move that will disrupt nearly 3,800 local students and their families. The decision is part of a nationwide wave of closures driven by declining enrollment and financial strain, with experts warning of long-term academic and community impacts if transitions aren't carefully managed.
   

3. Texas city council candidate who protested ICE shooting faces 'riot participation' charge (kdvr.com) — An Austin city council candidate, Misael Ramos, was arrested Saturday on a misdemeanor "riot participation" charge tied to a protest over an ICE shooting in the city. Authorities say he tried to block traffic with barricades, while Ramos and supporters insist he was peacefully protesting the wounding and detention of delivery driver Wilber Rafael Garces Perez.
   

4. Glow-up after 100: Centenarians at Austin senior living community get 'glamorous' makeovers from high schoolers (upworthy.com) — Centenarians at Westminster Senior Living in Austin recently marked National Centenarians Day with makeovers and conversation from LASA High School students involved in the GlamourGals program. The monthly visits bring nail and makeup sessions, games, and heartfelt talks that help Austin teens and elders build friendships and share life stories across generations.
   

5. Christian Ramírez scores two late goals to help Austin rally for 3-3 draw with San Diego (inquirer.com) — Austin FC fans saw a wild night at home as Christian Ramírez scored twice late to erase a 3-0 deficit and secure a 3-3 draw against San Diego, extending the club's unbeaten streak to eight. Austin now sits 4-3-6 at home and will host Nashville SC on October 10, giving local supporters another key match to circle.
