Texas Ranked 4th Hardest-Working State In America
With a storied work ethic rooted in a pioneering, can-do attitude, it's no surprise Lone Star State ranked highly. But who's harder working?
AUSTIN, TX — Americans are working an average of almost 1,800 hours per year with the average worker using only 54 percent of their available vacation time, according to available data. So where does Texas stack up in terms of the working life?
Glad you asked. Researchers at the personal-finance website WalletHub broke down the numbers in releasing its report on 2019’s Hardest-Working States in America. In order to determine where Americans work the hardest, WalletHub compared the 50 states across ten key metrics. The data set ranges from average workweek hours to share of workers with multiple jobs to annual volunteer hours per resident.

How Hard Does Texas Work? (1=Best, 25=Avg.)
- 4th – Avg. Workweek Hours
- 14th – Avg. Commute Time
- 26th – Employment Rate
- 20th – Avg. Leisure Time Spent per Day
Given the storied Texas work ethic marked by a can-do attitude rooted in a pioneering spirit, it's no surprise that the Lone Star State ranked so highly. However, North Dakota, Alaska, South Dakota ranked even more hard-working. Go figure. Nebraska ranked fifth.
