Weekend Events In Austin For May 11-13, 2018
Free family fun events are happening all over the city as summer nears.

AUSTIN, TX — It's beginning to look a lot like summer in Central Texas, and the variety of events, both indoor and outdoor, attests to this. In addition to events with paid admission, there is an abundant number of free events occurring this weekend, many that promise to be fun for the whole family.

The band's sixth studio album, Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino, drops on Friday. In celebration, The Parish is hosting a party with live covers by Mandy Bums and originals by Major Grizz. The Hellmouth is coming, slayers. This party demands that you come as your favorite character from the television show Buffy. Win some swag! Jam to music of the 90s! Get yer drink on at a recreated "The Bronze," Sunyyvales's hottest club for teens, vampires and werewolves. From 8 p.m. to midnight at 3TEN Austin City Limits Live, 310 W. Mobile Loaves & Fishes will screen Pixar's "Up" for a night of family fun. The movie runs from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. but attendees are encouraged early to tour the grounds of Community First! Village, a 27-acre master planned community providing affordable, permany housing and a supportive community for the disabled and chronically homeless in Central Texas. Bring a chair and/or blanket and enjoy the movie with friends and family.Standard movie concessions — candy, drinks, hot dogs, milkshakes and popcorn — will be available for sale (cash preferred). The event is FREE, but a $5 donation is appreciated.

Indie film and television stalwarts Mark and Jay Duplass talk about their new memoir Like Brothers, told through essays sharing the secrets of their success and the joys and frustrations of sibling collaboration. The brothers will regale their audience with tales of their trajectory — from a childhood spent with an oversize camera in the New Orleans of their youth to their shared years attending the University of Texas at Austin to their breakthrough short "Baghead" that spurred a Sundance film festival bidding war. The price of admission includes a signed copy of their book, and the brothers have vowed to stick around after their presentation to photo ops with fans. Find your Euphoria all season long with this Austin event series, including shows by Euphoria favorite artists, outdoor activities, and sustainability workshops, according to organizers. Children and parents are invited to come on out for a fun-filled day of LEGO building and discovery, organizers wrote on the event page. The Learning Fun 101 LEGO Robotics Fund days enables kids from four to 104 to build and create different projects at its activity centers. The event is staged at the Circle C Community Center, 7817 La Crosse Ave., from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. This is a FREE event, but you'll need to register here.
SILENT CITY'S SOUND AND LIGHT BATH
Elisabet Ney Museum, 304 E. 44th St.
Those attending this immersive experience in the museum’s Visiting Artists’ Gallery will interact with musical consoles altering the experience in the room with both sound and light emanating from hand-cast illuminated resin lamps hanging from the ceiling, organizers wrote on the Facebook event page. Running through Sunday, June 24, "Silent City" is Lauren Gurgiolo, Wendy Mitchell, and Lindsay Greene. The project is supported in part by a grant from the Cultural Arts Division of the City of Austin Economic Development Department. "Also ponder Catherine Lee’s Four Constants—Constant Trial, Constant Deliverance, Constant Sorrow, and Constant Question--the four monolithic outdoor sculptures that remain on extended loan. Crafted of cut, welded, and patinated bronze, they join Lee's 'Hebrides #6: Clach an Trushal,' " organizers wrote. This installation is on loan from The ContemporAry Austin in its Museum Without Walls program, made possible in part with support from the Edward and Betty Marcus Foundation. Closing out Tech Connect Week that began on May 7, the library's Cepeda Branch, 651 N. Pleasant Valley Rd., will stage a gathering where participants will learn how to create beats and foley, record and edit sounds and turn their computer keyboard into a sound mixing board. Tech Connect is a week of programs aimed at introducing people of all ages and walks of life to new digital technology and skills. This taco festival lets you chomp down on offerings from some of the region's finest taquerias while watching lucha libre-style Mexican wrestling matches from the likes of Doctor Muerte and Aski the Mayan Warrior with live background music from Superfónicos and other bands. What better way to spend a Saturday afternoon? It all goes down at Republic Square, 422 Guadalupe St. Doors open at 3 p.m. with matches starting an hour later. Price: $16 to $60.
Palm Park, 711 East 3rd St.
Win prizes, enjoy nourishing snacks, try yoga, climb a rock wall, learn about healthy-living resources, and more at the nonprofit Waller Creek Conservancy's first annual Field Day. This FREE family-friendly event will feature outdoor games for the kids and other fun activities. Along the way, attendees will learn the vital role parks play in maintaining a healthy, active lifestyle while witnessing the ongoing transformation of Waller Creek. St. David's Foundation is the event sponsor. When: Saturday, May 12, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Meet Austin's most compelling artists in the very creative spaces in which they create their works. Nearly 400 participating artists from a variety of media — from painting to tattooing to weaving — will be on hand, each one accessible to admirers of their work. The boundaries of this tour encompass west of Interstate 35; east of MoPac (Loop 1); south of Highway 183; and north of William Cannon Drive. Feast your eyes on the premier Flamence dance troupe in Austin while indulging in delicious paella, sangria or wine. ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE VIEWING PARTY

Attending this event might be a worth goal (do you see what we did there?). What better way to spend the morning than drinking Guinness beer while enjoying a sandwich buffet. This is where soccer fans will be gathered to watch all ten matches of the English Premier League's season-ending tournament. Haymaker will be the venue for this event that's free for all donating to It Starts With Soccer, a local organization "...combining soccer with community outreach projects to promote lasting change," as described on their website. It's a good cause, and you can donate here even if unable to attend. It's bound to be a ball (see what we did there?) at The Haymaker, 2310 Manor Rd., from 9 a.m. to noon. FREE.
604 Brazos St.
What with the Royal family being in the news of late (princesses having babies and a prince soon to be married and whatnot), the Driskill Hotel has emerged as a favorite stop for Anglophiles. Take mom out for a delightful Victorian afternoon tea complete with cucumber sandwiches. But not just cucumber sandwiches will be on hand but smoked salmon with dill goat cheese, deviled egg on brioche and green tea ricotta and pistachio on multi-grain; all served alongside premium loose leaf teas and sparkling wine. For dessert: French pastries and petite fours, including chocolate tulip cups and cream puffs. Tea will be served at 3 p.m. in the Driskill lobby. This special event costs $60 for adults and $40 for children (12-years-old and younger) plus tax and gratuity.
