City of Fort Worth Launches Campaign on Stray Bullet Incidents

The City of Fort Worth is trying to get ahead of the usual spike in stray bullet incidents on Fourth of July weekend with a public awareness campaign.

The city published a blog post about the issue on Tuesday. According to the post, stray bullet incidents often spike around July 4 and are an issue affecting residents citywide.

Therefore, the city is launching a campaign to reduce stray bullet incidents by increasing community understanding of the risks and consequences of reckless gun use.

The Fort Worth Police Department assures residents that the city is taking action to put a stop to these incidents and will not tolerate illegal gun violence. The goal is to establish a culture of safety, community intolerance of illegal gunfire, and active engagement.

As a reminder, fireworks are also illegal in Fort Worth, although the city does permit professional fireworks shows. In addition, setting off fireworks can result in a $2,000 fine.

The costs aren't only legal. Hospital emergency rooms treat thousands of fireworks injuries every year. Those injuries can include permanent damage to eyes, hands, and the face. So attending a professional fireworks show is safer all the way around.

To report illegal gunfire, first find a safe spot and then call 911.
