The Buckingham’s Bird Sanctuary Receives Wildlife Habitat Certification

Houston, TX, September 11, 2024- The Buckingham, a premier senior living community in Houston, has been officially certified as a Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation and Texas Conservation Alliance. This certification recognizes the community’s on-site bird sanctuary, Ken’s Garden, a cozy corner of the property that backs onto Buffalo Bayou and a wooden area. The sanctuary, which is approximately 400 square feet, is dedicated to creating a nurturing environment for birds, butterflies and other native species. Throughout the year, a variety of birds, including Northern Chickadees, Red Bellied Woodpeckers, House Finches, Northern Cardinals, White Winged Doves, Tufted Titmice, and Carolina Wrens, can be observed.

“The bird sanctuary not only has enhanced the natural beauty of our surroundings but also has allowed residents to connect with nature,” said Shannon Schmidt, director of life enrichment at The Buckingham. “We are proud to be recognized as a friend of wildlife and to contribute to conservation efforts to Texas.”

To receive the Wildlife Habitat Certification, The Buckingham was required to meet a number of guidelines, including providing native plants that support a variety of wildlife, ensuring access to water, offering shelter from severe weather and places for wildlife to hide from predators or hunt for prey, and creating safe spaces for wildlife to raise their young ones. Additionally, the community must maintain sustainable practices to ensure soil, water, and air stay healthy and clean.

In celebration of this milestone, the community is introducing additional features to the bird sanctuary. A new bird house will soon be installed, equipped with bird identification books and binoculars to enhance residents’ engagement with nature and wildlife. These enhancements will further enrich the lives of residents and support the community’s commitment to environmental responsibility.
