Conroe veteran Marcey Phillips and her service dog Beignet are being honored for dedication to country and community in the VFW #StillServing campaign. The national Veterans of Foreign Wars #StillServing campaign recognizes veterans who continue to serve in their community after the military.

After serving in Iraq, Phillips developed epilepsy and needed a service dog. Enter Beignet, who is trained to detect seizures. At the onset of a seizure, Beignet warns Phillips so she can get to a safe position and notify a family member. Since teaming up with Beignet, she has not had to visit the ER for seizures or seizure injury.

Beignet also wakes Phillips from nightmares and helps her deal with crowds. She enables Phillips to volunteer with the VFW, teach children service dog information and etiquette and visit nursing homes where Beignet is a big hit. Beignet helps her show people that you can overcome the mental health stigma and it is ok to admit you need help.

Phillips is #StillServing because “it is heartwarming to see people change their understanding of service dogs and I love seeing the faces of veterans, kids and the elderly light up when Beignet and I visit.”

VFW is proud to recognize Phillips and Beignet for #StillServing and invites all veterans to share their stories of continued service at vfw.org/stillserving.
