Cruz-O'Rourke Debate Postponed Due To Kavanaugh Confirmation

Organizers hope to reschedule the debate at the University of Houston prior to the November election.

HOUSTON, TX — The debate Sunday at the University of Houston between Rep. Beto O'Rourke and Sen. Ted Cruz has been postponed due to the confirmation hearing of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. The cancellation was confirmed this morning with both campaigns, university spokesman Mike Rosen told Patch.

"It's postponed due the senate voting schedule. We're working with both campaigns to reschedule," Rosen said. "It became apparent yesterday evening but was confirmed this morning."

Kavanaugh dominated the news cycle Thursday after he and Christine Blasey Ford, a Northern California research psychologist, testified in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee. Ford claims that Kavanaugh tried to rape her in the 1980s when both were high school students. She is one of three women who have come forward with claims of sexual misconduct against Kavanaugh.

"I don't have all the answers, and I don't remember as much as I would like to," Ford wrote in her prepared testimony. "But the details about that night that bring me here today are ones I will never forget."

Kavanaugh has denied all claims made against him. In a Fox News appearance Monday with his wife, Kavanaugh said he would not let, "false accusations drive us out of this process, and we're looking for a fair process where I can be heard and defend my integrity, my lifelong record."

Cruz spoke Friday at 10:46 a.m. in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

"The politics of personal destruction that we have seen in recent days is Washington, D.C. at its ugliest. We're talking about real human beings here. Dr. Ford has been through hell," Cruz said. "Judge Kavanaugh, he too has been dragged through the mud the past two weeks in a way that has no precedent."

The ongoing vote Friday morning can be viewed here.
