Addicks and Barker homeowners move closer to compensation after federal government ends appeal (click2houston.com) — West Houston homeowners upstream of Addicks and Barker reservoirs are finally closer to compensation for Hurricane Harvey flooding now that the federal government has dropped its Supreme Court appeal. Lawyers are building a formula to calculate individual payouts, with a tentative goal of having a settlement framework ready by early 2027, potentially helping families finish long-delayed repairs.
   

2. Houston water shutoffs: What customers need to know as city targets 15,000 delinquent accounts (fox26houston.com) — If you're a Houston water customer more than 90 days behind with a balance over $500 and a Sensus meter, you're in the first group being warned about possible future shutoffs. Houston Public Works says no disconnections start Sept. 8, but about 15,000 customers owing $30 million will get notices and can call 713-371-1400 to dispute bills or set payment plans.
   

3. Houston Cannabis Arrests Up Nearly 1200% Under Current Mayor (cannabislaw.report) — Houston residents are seeing a sharp rise in misdemeanor cannabis possession arrests, averaging about 440 a year under Mayor John Whitmire compared with roughly 35 annually from 2021–2023. As voters prepare for a November initiative to make cannabis possession the lowest enforcement priority, advocates argue the spike underscores their push, while the mayor maintains low-level cases aren't a focus.
   

4. The Hobby Center Announces The 2026-27 Breaking Bread Season Hosted by James Beard Award-Winning Chef Chris Shepherd (thekatynews.com) — Houston arts fans can look forward to an intimate three-part Breaking Bread conversation series at the Hobby Center's Founders Club, hosted by Houston chef Chris Shepherd and featuring guests like Gail Simmons and Houston Ballet artistic director Julie Kent. Beginning in November, evenings will pair candid discussions with a curated menu, with single tickets from $35 and three-show packages available.
   

5. Dead horse decaying in front of Harris Health System facility (fox26houston.com) — A dead horse has reportedly been lying for days outside a Harris Health System facility on Wayside Drive in Harris County, and nearby residents are worried it still hasn't been removed. A Houston 311 complaint has been filed and routed, but officials haven't said when the animal will be taken away or explained what happened.
