Former Texans Star Jacoby Jones Named Head Coach of Beaumont Renegades

American Indoor Football expansion franchise will officially join the league for the 2025 season

Former Houston Texans wide receiver and return specialist Jacoby Jones has been named the head coach of the Beaumont Renegades expansion franchise of American Indoor Football (AIF). He will also handle offensive coordinator duties.

Announced as an AIF expansion team in January, the Renegades will officially join the league, which was relaunched this year after previous stints throughout the mid-2000s, for the 2025 spring season.

“I appreciate the opportunity and the trust in me from the owners,” Jones said. “I’m excited about showing the fans in Beaumont a whole different kind of fun in football. We want the fans to have fun and I am going to make sure I do everything I can as head coach and offensive coordinator to make that happen.”

The Texans drafted Jones in the third round (No. 73 overall) of the 2007 NFL draft from Lane College in Jackson, Tennessee. He was predominantly a returner for the Texans, taking 179 punt returns for 1,820 yards and three touchdowns along with 64 kickoff returns for 1,490 and a touchdown.

As a receiver, he caught 127 passes for 1,741 yards and 11 touchdowns in his 75 games with Houston, 21 of which he started from 2007-11.

After being released by the Texans in 2012, Jones signed with the Baltimore Ravens, where he played for the next three seasons from 2012-2014. As a member of the Ravens in Super Bowl XLVII, he became the first player to score a receiving touchdown and return touchdown in the same Super Bowl. His 108-yard touchdown return on the second-half kickoff remains the longest play in Super Bowl or postseason history. The Ravens went on to beat the San Francisco 49ers, 34-31.

Jones spent the 2015 season split between the San Diego Chargers and Pittsburgh Steelers, before finishing his professional football career in 2017 as a member of the Monterrey Steel of the National Arena League.

Jones is not the only addition to the Renegades organization with NFL or Super Bowl experience. New England Patriots defensive end and former Super Bowl champion Deatrich Wise, Jr. is one of three team owners.

“During his playing career, Jacoby lit the field on fire with his breathtaking kick returns in big moments,” said Wise. “As a coach, he’ll no doubt bring that same level of excitement to Beaumont and help our players try and do the same.”
