Harmony School of Innovation – Sugar Land Alumnus Earns Prestigious Goldwater Scholarship

Harmony School of Innovation – Sugar Land proudly celebrates alumnus Aaditya Krishna Arun, who has been awarded the highly competitive Barry Goldwater Scholarship, one of the nation’s most prestigious honors for undergraduate students pursuing careers in science, engineering and mathematics.

Arun, now a neuroscience undergraduate at The University of Texas at Dallas, was selected from more than 5,000 college sophomores and juniors nationwide. The Goldwater Foundation will award 454 scholarships for the 2026-27 academic year.

Arun’s passion for scientific research began during his time at Harmony School of Innovation – Sugar Land, where he developed a strong foundation in STEM education and inquiry-based learning. His early work included a science fair project focused on filtering contaminated drinking water to support communities in India.

“I wanted to find a way to purify drinking water that had excess fluoride, which is harmful to human health,” Arun said. “I was looking for a solution that was inexpensive, efficient and environmentally sound that could be applied in a village setting.”

Using recycled kitchen materials to create biofilters, Arun successfully removed approximately 90% of fluoride from contaminated water, research he continued throughout his high school years at Harmony.

His academic journey evolved further after becoming a caregiver for a family member experiencing neuropathy, sparking a deep interest in neuroscience, nerve repair and regeneration.

At UT Dallas, Arun has continued to excel both in research and in the classroom. He serves as a teaching assistant in biology and works in the university’s Chemistry Clinic, where he supports freshman students.

“Aaditya’s passion for research is matched by his growing commitment to teaching and science communication,” said Dr. Stephanie Taylor, associate professor of instruction in science and mathematics education at UT Dallas. “He is not only advancing his own knowledge but inspiring others to pursue science.”

Arun plans to pursue a Ph.D., with interests that may also include medical school. His long-term goal is to contribute to clinical and translational science while helping patients and effectively communicating scientific discoveries.

In addition to the Goldwater Scholarship, Arun has been selected for a Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship at UT Southwestern Medical Center.

The Goldwater Scholarship, established by Congress in 1986, recognizes outstanding undergraduates who show exceptional promise in research careers in the sciences, engineering and mathematics. It is widely considered the premier undergraduate award in these fields.
