Houston Area Remains Under A Tornado And Severe Thunderstorm Watch

Severe weather expected to impact the area through the early afternoon hours, making for a soggy Valentine's Day.

HOUSTON, TX -- The Houston Office of Emergency Management is activating the city’s emergency operations center this morning as a line of thunderstorms begins to move through the Houston area.

At 6:30 a.m. the National Weather Service issued tornado warnings for residents south of the Houston area in Wharton County, Fort Bend County, and Austin County, until 7:45 a.m.

At 8 a.m., the warning was extended until 8:45 a.m. and expanded to include Harris and Brazoria Counties.

Meanwhile, a severe thunderstorm warning has been issued until 8:30 a.m. for residents in Wharton, Brazoria, Colorado, Harris, Fort Bend, Waller and Grimes Counties until 8:30 a.m.

According to the National Weather Service, the thunderstorms are capable of producing wind gusts of up to 70 miles per hour, and heavy rain amounts of at least two inches per hour are expected and could produce flash flooding.
