Houston PGA Pro to Rep Team USA in PGA Cup

Houston PGA of America Golf Professional Jared Jones of River Oaks Country Club will be competing on the international stage after earning a spot on the Team USA roster for the PGA Cup at Sunriver Resort (Meadows Course), in Sunriver, Oregon September 9-15.

Hosted by the PGA of America, the event is seen as the pinnacle for any PGA Professional as Team USA and Team Great Britain & Ireland compete head-to-head in a Ryder Cup format for bragging rights and the Llandudno International Trophy. First played in 1973, the PGA Cup is contested by teams of 10 players over three days, with four foursomes and four four-ball matches on each of the first two days, and 10 singles matches on the final day. The U.S. Team in the biennial international showcase for PGA Club Professionals was determined through a two-year points system that included the past two PGA Professional Championships and two PGA Championships.

Jones, the PGA Director of Instruction at River Oaks, also recently competed in the 2024 PGA Championship held at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky where he put his skills to the test against the best players in the world - such as Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele and many others.

Competing on TOUR each week is the primary job of professional golfers; however, Jones is a PGA of America Golf Professional and his day-to-day responsibilities at River Oaks are vastly different than a PGA TOUR player. His responsibilities consist of managing an entire facility, overseeing member programs and executing player development programs, among other professional duties.

No prize money is awarded to competitors in the PGA Cup. Members of both teams compete solely for their country and their country’s right of possession of the Llandudno International Golf Trophy. Practice rounds will begin on Monday, with the competition rounds set to take place Friday-Sunday.
