Houston Power Outage: Winds Gusts Leave Thousands in the Dark

According to the National Weather Service, Sunday is an extremely windy day.

HOUSTON, TX — More than 20,000 customers in the Houston area are currently without power, according to CenterPoint Energy.

Wind gusts of up to nearly 50 miles per hour were reported in the area. The National Weather Service's office in Houston warned that Sunday would be an extremely windy day. According to the NWS, there are reports of power lines and fences down as well as damage to trees.

Power has been restored to some customers. At 1 p.m., CenterPoint reported that over 52,000 were without power.

"Crews are working quickly, safely to remove trees and debris from lines," the utility company said on Twitter.

A wind advisory is in place until 5 p.m. for all of southeast Texas and a gale warning is in effect for the upper Texas coast.

The southeastern U.S. has been ravaged with extreme weather. At least 15 people have been killed due to the extreme weather. The deaths occurred in Mississippi and Georgia.
