Houston Weather: Thunderstorms Leave 72K Now Without Power

Powerful thunderstorms downed trees and power lines, leaving more than 100,000 people without power. That number fell to nearly 73,000.

HOUSTON, TX — Harris County businesses and homes are gradually seeing their power return after powerful thunderstorms downed trees, fences, signs and power lines. The storms initally left more than 100,000 people without power in the county.

That number fell to just under 73,000 Sunday afternoon, nearly all of whom are CenterPoint Energy customers.

Video and photos posted on Twitter showed cars navigating around several downed trees. A sign on the 3200 block of Fairhope Street was toppled and at least one large tree fell and landed on top of somebody's home.

The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm watch for several counties until 3 p.m. They are: Austin, Burleson, Fort Bend, Harris, Liberty, Montgomery, Trinity, Washington, Brazoria, Chambers, Galveston, Houston, Madison, Polk, Walker, Wharton, Brazos, Colorado, Grimes, Jackson, Matagorda, San Jacinto and Waller.

Across the state, more than 172,000 people were without power. That includes about 20,000 in Montgomery County.

Meanwhile, residents were warned of possible tornadoes in Trinity, Westwood Shores and Lovelady until 2:15 p.m.
