🌱Dallas County COVID Risk 'Red' + Metro Faces Homeless Veterans

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Irving.

Happy Friday, people of Irving! Let's get you all caught up on what's happening locally to start today off on an informed note.

First, today's weather:

Cloudy and very warm. High: 73 Low: 63.

Here are the top five stories today in Irving:

  1. The Dallas County Public Health Committee has moved the COVID-19 threat level to 'Red,' the highest risk level possible. Area doctors and health officials convened to discuss the jump in positive test rates earlier this week, deciding to elevate the threat and raise public awareness. No restrictions are immediately forthcoming, although the committee advises county residents to take extra precautions, wear masks and get vaccinated if you haven't yet done so. (CBS Dallas / Fort Worth)
  2. The Metro Dallas Homeless Alliance estimates there are around 300 veterans in the area who are currently experiencing homelessness. Winston Henvey reports on Dallas County's plans to mitigate that phenomenon over the course of the next year. The county has additional plans to tackle homelessness among families by the year 2025. Get the details at Star Local Media.
  3. Look back at some of the most viewed stories of 2021 over on NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth. The October school shooting in Arlington, a woman driving her car into an Irving liquor store and the treacherous ice that led to the deaths of six in Fort Worth last February were among the stories that captivated readers this past year.
  4. Find out more about an Arlington crash that resulted in the death of a 29-year-old man and his pet dog earlier this week. (Fort Worth Star-Telegram; subscription required)
  5. Forewarned is forearmed— it's true even of looking ahead at the weather. Get the latest forecast for the weekend ahead at Irving Patch.

From my notebook:

  • Many people have the tradition of eating a spoonful of black-eyed peas on New Years. Visit Irving knows where to get `em: Po Melvin's Restaurant. Click over for an article on the local spot! (Facebook)
  • City of Irving reminds folks that temperatures are predicted to drop this weekend! Don't forget to turn off automatic sprinkler systems, which could cause dangerously icy conditions on roadways and sidewalks. Learn more on Facebook.
  • Irving Convention Center writes, "Dear 2022: Please bring lots of events like this to our home in the LC entertainment district … where fun is a given and safe is the new sexy!" Check out its throwback post from an epic event earlier this year. (Instagram)
