🌱Homeless Alliance Gifted $10 Mil + Local School Mourns Powell

Here's a five-minute guide to the most important things happening today in town.

Happy Wednesday, people of Irving Metro Land! Here's everything you need to know about what's happening in the area today.

First, today's weather:

Partly sunny. High: 84 Low: 66.

Here are the top stories today in Irving:

  1. Grand Prairie's Colin Powell Elementary School students and staff are mourning the former secretary of state who died Monday from complications of COVID-19. The school opened in 1997, and Powell paid a visit shortly thereafter. One teacher remembers the visit, saying that Powell "instilled a tradition of hard work and excellence for students over the last two decades." (NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth)
  2. Elena Rivera reports that local efforts to curb homelessness are getting a financial boost. The Metro Dallas Homeless Alliance's rapid rehousing program is set to receive $10 million in private gifts to fund housing vouchers, education and case management for people experiencing homelessness. The program's goal is to get 2,700 people and families settled into housing over the next two years. (KERA News)
  3. There's more news on the proposed concrete batch plant near a West Dallas neighborhood that locals aren't too happy about. Neighbors like Debbie Solis worry about the proliferation of similar plants in the area as well as the impact it may have on children's health. The new plant is planned for a lot adjacent to Eladio Martinez Elementary School. "We don't want our children to be sick," Solis says. (NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth)
