🌱Irving PD's DWI Crackdown + Expert's Opinion On City Suing Hulu

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Irving.

Up and at 'em, Irving! It's Thursday, so let's get you started with everything you need to know going on today in town.

First, today's weather:

Mostly sunny and very warm. High: 73 Low: 59.

Here are the top stories today in Irving:

  1. In the wake of the tragic toddler death caused by a drunk driver last week, it's no wonder Irving Police are cracking down on DWIs. The department announced a DWI Enforcement Initiative that will last over the New Years holiday, from December 31 through January 2. Police say they'll target high-risk areas and increase their visibility in the community. (Irving Weekly)
  2. Despite record high temps lately, it's still winter, and the City of Irving is reminding folks to take the usual winter precautions. One of those precautions is to turn off automatic watering systems to avoid potential plumbing damage and dangerous ice in the event of freezes. The agency notes that much of the North Texas vegetation is dormant this time of year, so regular watering is often unnecessary. Learn more about watering restrictions by clicking the link.
  3. Get the latest on the suit brought by cities like Irving against streaming services at the Texas Standard. The publication interviewed a legal expert in the fields of communication and technology, John Bergmayer, who says cases such as this are becoming more common. Bergmayer also points out such suits may be misguided: one purpose of franchise fees was to prevent 'redlining' of internet access; such a problem doesn't necessarily exist for services like Netflix or Hulu.
  4. Learn about Cowboys' owner Jerry Jones and his new mixed-use development in Irving at The Dallas Morning News (subscription required).
  5. COVID-19 is surging again. Here's what to do if you test positive. (CBS Dallas / Fort Worth)
