Irving: Protect Pipes From Freezing Temperatures

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued warning for a hard freeze and dangerous wind chill temperatures. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect through 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 15 for the entire North Texas region.

Residents should prepare for extreme winter weather, including dangerous record-breaking low temperatures, freezing rain and heavy blowing snow. Irving Water Utilities recommends these precautions to help prevent frozen pipes in and around the home:
Stay Safe
Remember that during extreme weather events, water pipes can freeze and break, including those not directly exposed to the frigid air.

- Drip interior faucets, especially those adjacent to exterior walls.
- Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to ensure plumbing gets additional warm air.
- Turn off irrigation systems when temperatures drop below freezing.
- Protect outdoor faucets. A towel and plastic bag wrapped around an outdoor faucet and secured with duct tape is a quick, easy fix when commercially made covers are unavailable.
- Disconnect garden hoses and store in a protected area.
