1. NovoFly (TM) screwworm strain readied for active duty (riverreporter.com) — Kerrville's Knipling-Bushland Livestock Insects Research Laboratory is preparing a new all-male screwworm fly strain, NovoFly, for regulatory approval and eventual field use. This locally developed technology could double the number of sterile males released, strengthening efforts to protect Texas and regional livestock from destructive screwworm outbreaks while continuing the lab's decades-long legacy in insect control.

2. Texas Hill Country Trail Alliance: $113,800 raised, 100 acres of undeveloped park, and a rule about carpet – The Kerr County Lead (kerrcountylead.com subscription) — A longtime Kerrville bike shop owner has launched the Texas Hill Country Trail Alliance to turn 100 underused acres at Singing Wind Park into a major trail and dog-park destination. With $113,800 already raised toward a $160,000 goal, the group is also leading River Trail cleanups and training volunteers to protect the Guadalupe's banks while improving outdoor options for Kerrville residents recovering from recent floods.

3. Water Street Festival returns Oct. 24 — and a three-year-old's dance at Francisco's is why – The Kerr County Lead (kerrcountylead.com) — Kerrville's Water Street Festival is set to return downtown on Saturday, Oct. 24, bringing street closures, live music, kids' activities, and free booths for local nonprofits. Organizers say the post-flood event is about more than fun, arguing that drawing tourists back downtown is essential to keeping Kerrville businesses alive during a long recovery. Vendor details are available online.

4. San Antonio Fire Chief censured by international fire union, claims 'substantial loss in confidence' in her leadership (ksat.com) — Kerrville briefly enters the spotlight here as the site of a 2025 legislative hearing where San Antonio's fire chief urged lawmakers to create a state disaster emergency fund. Now, she's been formally censured by the international firefighters union over disciplinary, policy, and pay disputes in San Antonio, raising questions about her relationship with rank-and-file firefighters ahead of the next contract talks.

5. Why do so many Texans live in flood zones? What we found. (texastribune.org) — Deadly floods in Kerr County and along the Guadalupe in Kerrville anchor a deeper look at why so many Texans still live in high-risk flood zones.
