Fundraiser Scheduled To Benefit Injured Round Rock Officer
Proceeds will help veteran policeman Charles Whites defray medical costs as he recovers after being hit by a car while directing traffic.

ROUND ROCK, TX — A barbecue fundraiser is scheduled in April to benefit Round Rock police officer Charles Whites, still recovering after being hit by a driver as he directed traffic on Feb. 25.
Whites was at the scene along Interstate 35 where police found a pedestrian who had been struck dead by a hit-and-run driver, directing traffic away from the site of the fatal collision last month. The officer became a victim himself after being hit by a motorist who has since been charged
The veteran officer has been gradually recovering from his injuries ever since. The fundraiser designed to help defray medical costs is scheduled on Sunday, April 15, from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Alan Baca Center, 301 West Bagdad Ave.

The community of Round Rock has galvanized in support of Office Whites since he was injured. The 100 Club of Texas, a nonprofit organization providing financial assistance to families of first responders have provided assistance, and a benefit for the officer organized by Long Branch Saloon officials was staged on Sunday.

"C'mon out for some good food, classic cars, and a great cause," police department officials wrote in their Facebook invitation to the April 15 fundraiser for the injured officer.
Whites continues to make progress as he recovers, although his improvement has been slow given the extent of his injuries. Police report he is now able to swallow food and liquids on his own and squeeze his right hand on command.
