For his part, Goulden said he would depart with a sens pf pride over the company's significant post-merger achievements. The merger created the world's largest privately held firm. Goulden, 58, joined EMC in 2002 and at various times served as president, chief operating officer, and chief financial officer of the independent company.

"The decision to step down following Dell Technologies’ first year anniversary comes with a profound sense of pride for what we achieved in a very short amount of time," Goulden said. "Under Michael’s leadership, and through the tireless work of our team members globally, we delivered on our commitment to our customers, exceeded our own expectations and stand poised as the essential infrastructure company to help customers realize their digital future. The transition of EMC into Dell EMC is complete and we’re executing in the market with great momentum. The time is right for a personal transition, and to bring the product groups together under Jeff’s most capable leadership.”

Formerly serving as president of Dell Inc., Clarke is now poised to lead both Dell's client solutions (PCs and laptops) and infrastructure product efforts. He also was named vice chairman of products and operations. He praised Goulden while expressing his excitement over the future.

"David’s track record of leadership spans many years," Clarke said in a prepared statement. "He’s been a tremendous partner to me over the past year, and I wish him the very best. Looking ahead, I’m very excited about our team and our path forward. We will remain steadfast to our long-term strategy, invest for maximum impact and continue to innovate on behalf of our customers around the world.”
