Here are the top stories today in San Antonio:
- Thursday, March 31, would have been César Chávez's birthday and for the first time ever, this year San Antonio is going to observe that day as a paid city holiday. Mayor Ron Nirenberg, who announced the holiday in February at a city council meeting, said, "San Antonio is the seventh largest city in the country and the second largest city in Texas with a majority Latino community, so recognizing March 31 as an official city holiday not only honors the lifelong work of a great Latino leader, but also honors the importance of culture and history of so many of our residents and families." On that day, "City Hall and most municipal offices will be closed," but "public safety and emergency services will remain in operation." For an operating schedule of other city offices and services during the holiday, please visit: (Texas Public Radio)
- After two years of not being held due to COVID-19, the Battle of Flowers Band Festival is returning to the Alamo Stadium on Thursday, April 7. "More than 30 local high school bands" will be participating in this year's festival with the theme of "Viva las Flores." The very first festival took place in 1937, and "according to the Battle of Flowers Association, it is the oldest and longest-running marching band festival in the U.S." Tickets for the Battle of Flowers Band Festival range from $7 for general admission up to $19.50 for premium reserved seats. Gates will open at 5 p.m. with the prelude beginning at 6:30 p.m. and a mass band finale will be held around 9:35 p.m. The event will also air on KSAT 12 TV and livestream on KSAT.com from 2-5 p.m. For more details and for a list of participating bands visit: (KSAT San Antonio)
- The Magik Theatre is calling for non-equity adult actors to audition for roles for their 2022-23 season. The theatre company "supports diversity in all forms" and encourages "actors of all genders, identities, races, ethnicities, and abilities to audition." Although many of the roles listed "fall on the cisgender binary," they "invite actors to audition for the gender expression of their choice." To register to audition, Click HERE to go to online registration form and scroll down to the bottom of webpage to find the form. Audition appointment slots are on Thursday, April 14 from 1-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m., and Saturday, April 16 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. For more information and for a list of characters with details visit: (CTX Live Theatre)
