Here are the top stories today in San Antonio:
- On Saturday, March 19, the Studio at Ruby City located at 150 Camp St. will hold an opening reception for an art exhibition by Berlin-based artist Arturo Herrera. The exhibition is called "Arturo Herrera: Constructed Collage" and it will feature more than 20 of his works of art. "The solo show encompasses the artist's expansive practice and use of materials" and "explores Herrera's work from 1998 to 2019, presenting artworks in a variety of media, including collages, a cut felt wall-hanging, sculpture, prints and wall works." The exhibition is free and will start on Thursday, March 3 until Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2023, and will be open from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Thursday through Sunday. - After two years of being postponed due to COVID-19, the 26th annual Cesar Chavez March for Justice will take place again on Saturday, March 26 with the theme "La Causa Sigue," which means "The Cause Continues" in Spanish. Also, this year "City Council voted to observe Cesar Chavez' birthday, March 31, as a paid city holiday." Mayor Ron Nirenberg said, "This year's march is especially important as we prepare to celebrate the first Cesar Chavez Day in San Antonio later this month." He added, "San Antonio is the 7th largest city in the country and the second largest city in Texas with a majority Latino community, so recognizing March 31 as an official city holiday not only honors the lifelong work of a great Latino leader, but also honors the importance of culture and history of so many of our residents and families." At the start of the march route, canned good donations will be collected for the "Yes we CAN" food drive for the San Antonio Food Bank. There will also be music and food, and CELEF chair Ernest J. Martinez and the First Lady of San Antonio Erika Prosper Nirenberg will give speeches during the event. The celebration will continue with entertainment at 7 p.m. at the San Fernando Ballroom, and tickets for that are $31 with proceeds going toward student scholarships. - After 25 years as a veteran sportscaster with KENS 5 TV, Joe Reinagel retired on Monday, March 1, when he gave his last sport newscast at night. "During his time at the San Antonio station, Reinagel has covered five Spurs championships, the Super Bowl, and countless high school football games. Reinagel also was one of the first to nab an interview with Tim Duncan after he was drafted by the San Antonio Spurs."
