🌱 Back To School In SA + SA Food Bank Mobile Mercado Stops At S. Side

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in San Antonio.

Hello, neighbors. I'm back in your inbox this warm morning to walk you through all the most important things happening these days in San Antonio. Let's dive right in...

First, today's weather:

Partly sunny and hot. High: 101 Low: 76.

📢 I'm looking for business owners and marketers in San Antonio who want to build awareness, connect with customers and increase sales.

I have a limited number of sponsorships available to introduce our San Antonio Daily readers to local businesses they need to know about. If that's you, then I invite you to learn more and secure your spot now.

Here are the top stories today in San Antonio:

  1. School will be back in session before you know it, but many stores have already started their back-to-school sales, and tax-free weekend will follow soon after. Also, schools will soon hold "meet the teacher" night for students and parents to learn all about "the upcoming academic year." Find out when San Antonio schools start for the 2022-23 year at: (mySA)
  2. A playful dog named Nugget tried "to make friends with a porcupine last week," but instead ended up "with a face full of quills!" Early this month, Nugget was on the list to be euthanized but according to San Antonio Pets Alive, "a foster stepped in and saved his life." His foster parent said that the unfortunate meeting with the porcupine happened when Nugget was playing in the backyard. He was "rushed to an emergency vet clinic" and is doing much better, but unfortunately the surgical bills are up to $2,500 and he's still due for follow-up visits. "San Antonio Pets Alive is asking for donations to help cover the cost of Nugget's medical bills" and if you're interested, he is also "available for adoption!" (KSAT San Antonio)
  3. Fifteen years later, "police are still searching for the killer" who shot 14-year-old Adrian Rangel on July 4, 2007 "at the intersection of Acme and Castroville roads." According to them, "Adrian was a passenger in a vehicle when someone fired a shotgun into the car, striking him." Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $5,000 "for information that leads to the arrest of the person/people responsible for Adrian's death." Anyone with information is asked to please call Crime Stoppers at 210-224-7857 (STOP). Calls will remain anonymous. (KSAT San Antonio)
  4. On Wednesday, July 20, the San Antonio Food Bank Mobile Mercado truck made a stop at "the parking lot of Community Medicare Partners at 2121 Pleasanton Road." According to Ana Chavez, manager for the Food Bank Mobile Mercado, "the program began in 2016 to bring fresh produce to food deserts in San Antonio. This is the first time they've been to this location." The event was "hosted by HealthTexas Medical Group" and was geared for seniors, but anyone was able to partake, regardless of their age. Local resident Daniel Sampayo said, "This is San Antonio helping San Antonians, which is the best part about it. It's awesome." 5. Next month, "a cozy Irish pub called The Cottage" will be opening up "near the Witte Museum." Owners Phil and Gina Bentley who "also operate Waxy O'Connors on the River Walk, have gutted the defunct space at 3810 Broadway — former home of enchilada haven Picante Grill — and injected it with Emerald Isle charm." The venue will feature "multiple vignettes, including an area with high-backed booths, a 'living room' with a fireplace and small stage, a bright and airy sunroom and a walled-in courtyard patio."
