Here are the top stories today in San Antonio:
- On Sunday, Jan. 9, comedian Bob Saget was found dead in his hotel room while on tour in Florida, and a cause of death has not yet been reported. Last summer, the 65-year-old actor had performed two stand-up comedy shows at San Antonio's Laugh Out Loud Comedy Club and during that time, he told the San Antonio Current "that he hadn't been as excited to do standup comedy since the mid '90s." He said, "When I stopped doing [America's Funniest Videos] and Full House, standup is something I took really seriously. I started loving it more and touring more." The talented actor and comedian will be sorely missed, but "if fans can take any consolation in the death of Bob Saget, it's that he died doing what he loved: standup comedy." (sacurrent.com)
- "Charlie Bee Company, a reality TV show starring local beekeeper and bee removal specialist Charlie Agar, is set to air nationwide on PBS stations." The show, which is broken down into eight one-hour episodes, features Agar at "work along the Austin-San Antonio corridor." Ager said, "People are just now beginning to understand how important bees are to the ecosystem, and I'm so excited to share my love for all things bees and beekeeping." He added, "We had an absolute blast making this show." (culturemap.com)
- KENS5, along with Five Star Cleaners and Santikos theater, are asking for coats for the annual Cold Days, Warm Hearts coat drive in San Antonio. The coats collected are cleaned and donated to Samministries, Christian Assistance Ministries, and Pearl Street Church, where they're distributed to those in need so that they can stay warm during the cold winter months. - Audrey Webber, teacher at the Harmony School of Excellence, had recently bought school supplies for her students with her own money, but unfortunately the Amazon package with the supplies was stolen from her front porch. She immediately alerted her neighborhood through her Nextdoor app and said, "I wanted my immediate neighbors to know this is happening now." I wanted the robbers to see that "I was being snarky" and "if it was someone in the neighborhood that took it, I wanted them to know, 'You didn't steal from me. You stole from kids and shame on you!'" Her post received over 100 responses and Amazon even offered to refund her money so she could get more supplies! Weber, who was touched by everyone's generosity "said she can't thank her community and neighbors enough" and "wants this experience to be a life lesson to her students." She said, "Even though something bad happens, something good can always come from it. This was bad but the bad was this 'big.' And the good that came from this amount of bad is just huge!" During that time, local "popular eateries will offer brunch, lunch, and/or dinner menus at a fixed price," with prices ranging from $20-$30 for lunch and between $35-$55 for dinner three-course meals, with to-go options due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
