🌱 City Of SA CPS Proposal +Housing Unit Plans At Tower Life Building

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in San Antonio.

Hello, everybody! It's me, Gabriela Cantu Couvillion, your host of the San Antonio Daily — back in your inbox with everything you need to know about what's happening in town.

First, today's weather:

An afternoon thunderstorm. High: 96 Low: 77.

📢 I'm looking for business owners and marketers in San Antonio who want to build awareness, connect with customers and increase sales.

I have a limited number of sponsorships available to introduce our San Antonio Daily readers to local businesses they need to know about. If that's you, then I invite you to learn more and secure your spot now.

Here are the top stories in San Antonio today:

  1. "As part of a $3.4 billion budget," the City of San Antonio proposed to "give back $50 million to CPS customers." During a city council meeting on Thursday, Aug. 11, various recommendations were presented by "City Manager Erik Walsh and other top city staff" for "the rough draft of the budget council...expected to pass in mid-September." The budget proposal "includes investments in capital projects at the airport, convention center, Alamodome, and numerous voter-approved bond projects." More at: (KSAT San Antonio)
  2. During a Bexar County commissioners' meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 9, the new owners of San Antonio's Tower Life building "presented their plans" to "convert the office space into housing units." If the deal moves forward, "the county may offer tax breaks or monetary incentives to advance the project," but some units would have to meet "affordable housing standards." Commissioner Tommy Calvert said, "We want high-end products, we want middle-income products, and we want affordable products...We want a diversity of options." (KENS5.com)
  3. As San Antonio students go back to school, some of them "dread it because they'd rather have a longer summer break, but the reality of school shootings and the emotions they bring" only adds "to those feelings." Many parents also worry, and according to Dr. Giancarlo Ferruzzi, a psychiatrist at UT Health San Antonio, "parents' concerns can range from safety within schools, especially in light of school shootings, to whether their child's needs are being met within their education." Fortunately, "there are ways that parents can address these feelings with their children," and at the same time, ease their own feelings. 4. Since 2021, "culinary pros" from San Antonio and Austin have competed in San Antonio's "Taco Rumble," to see who can "sling the best tacos." The goal of the contest is "to prove which city best represents the Tex-Mex staple while raising funds for the Texas Food & Wine Alliance." This year, "chefs from Houston and Dallas" will participate, in addition to local ones, and proceeds will "fund a grant program for chefs, farmers and artisan producers." It will take place from 7:30-10 p.m. at the San Antonio Museum of Art, located at 200 W. Jones Ave. VIP tickets at $150 will "include access to the Casa Noble lounge at Tre Trattoria and early entry at 7 p.m." Also, "VIP guests can expect specialty cocktails and bites from local celebrity chef Jason Dady paired with Casa Noble's award-winning tequila portfolio." (San Antonio Current)
  5. On Thursday, Aug. 11, "dozens of shots" were heard "in the 700 block of South San Bernardo Avenue" on the West side. According to police, they received a call "just before 3 a.m." and when they arrived, they found a man who had been shot in the face. According to the man, "he was sleeping in a shack on the property when someone started shooting but he didn't see the shooter." The man was "hit in the jaw by one of the bullets" and is now in the hospital "in stable condition," but unfortunately "the shooter" has not been found. (550 KTSA)
