Here are the top stories in San Antonio today:

  1. On Saturday, May 7, "Texans voted on two amendments to the state constitution" regarding property tax relief during "Election Day in Texas." Prop 1, which "will set a lower property tax rate for elderly and disabled homeowners...passed with nearly 87% support" and Prop 2 which "will allow homeowners to further reduce their home's market value which would decrease their property taxes...passed with nearly 85% support." For more details on the results, please visit: (Spectrum News)
  2. The San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) "Women in Policing" event was held on Saturday, May 7, to encourage more women to join the police force. Participants were provided with "free situational awareness training," which included "learning firearm safety drills and an obstacle course." Sara Munoz, SAPD officer, said, "We want to get more women on the department. We feel we need more women on the department. We want to make it more unisex than it is now and that's why we put on these events specializing for women so that they can come out. Any barriers that they may face, we can kind of take down those walls so that they do apply with us and become the best officer they can be." The next such event will be held in August, and you can sign up at sapdcareers.com if interested. (FOX 29)
  3. After two years of not taking place due to COVID-19, Paseo Por El Westside which started in 2010 returned to the "Rinconcito de Esperanza" on the westside. The event hosted by "The Esperanza Peace and Justice Center, along with the Westside Preservation Alliance, and Historic Westside Residents' Association" featured mariachi music and "aguas frescas" to keep the crowds hydrated, and attendees got the "opportunity to learn and reflect back on the history of the neighborhood through speakers, activities, and tours, while also celebrating its present day contributions to San Antonio culture." Graciela Sanchez, Director of Esperanza Peace and Justice Center, said, "We saw and continue to see a loss of buildings being demolished, this neighborhood has the highest number of demolitions," She added, "The westside is in a constant battle with gentrification and the displacement of mostly Latino families, but events like this keep those memories and traditions alive." To preserve people's history of the westside, the center plans to collect their stories and share them on the Museo del Westside opening soon. For more information visit: (KENS5.com)
