Here are the top stories in San Antonio today:
- San Antonio's Frost Tower is up for sale, and "New York real estate firm Newmark" listed it "as the 'crown jewel' — without an asking price" but in 2021, the property, which opened in 2019, was "assessed at $99.5 million." According to Bill Day, senior vice president of corporate communications for Frost Bank, "the potential sale will not affect on the company's long-term lease, which ends in June 2039" but he "declined to comment further on the sale." - San Antonio vascular surgeon, Dr. Lyssa Ochoa, spoke on Tuesday about a clinical trial for people with diabetes and vascular diseases in underserved communities. For a newscast video of the Q&A session with Ochoa, please visit: (KSAT San Antonio)
- On Friday, Jan. 14, KSAT 12 traffic anchor Samuel King said goodbye to San Antonio to start a new position as the weekend editor at Minnesota Public Radio. Although he was only in San Antonio a little over a year, the New York City native said, "he quickly found his place at KSAT and in the Alamo City" and "he will always remember the people, and of course, the food." He added, "Love breakfast tacos and the history of downtown. I think most people here get to know you. You're part of the family. You know, there are so many warm and generous people." - Due to the surge in COVID-19 cases, this year San Antonio's official Cowboy Breakfast will be held as a private event on Friday, Jan. 28, to benefit the city's first responders. Susan Cochran, a Cowboy Breakfast board member, said, "Like most U.S. cities, San Antonio has felt a sharp rise in cases due to the omicron variant. The city's current risk level is 'severe' and worsening." She added, "In keeping with the spirit of the event, we will be preparing tacos for our first responders." Some local eateries will be hosting offshoot parties that day, such as Doc Brown's, who will host a Big Red and barbacoa breakfast; Smoke BBQ downtown, which will kick off its second annual Kegs & Eggs party at 8 a.m.; and Far West Event Center, located on 2502 Pleasanton Road, that will open at 6 a.m. For more details, visit: (mysanantonio.com)
- For those suffering from broken hearts, this Valentine's Day the San Antonio Zoo will give them a chance to name a roach, rodent or veggie after their ex before feeding "him" or "her" to the animals! Of course, it's all symbolical and in support of wildlife conservation. The Cry Me a Cockroach fundraiser has "attracted over 3,500 'somewhat bitter' donors from more than 30 countries and every state in the U.S." since it started 3 years ago. Tim Morrow, president and CEO of the San Antonio Zoo, said " "We are very excited to bring back this Valentine's favorite to exes from all over the world." He added, "the roaches and humanely pre-frozen rodents used are already part of the animals' typical diets" and the "fundraiser is a perfect way to rid that negative energy and contribute to securing a future for wildlife in doing so." For those that are looking for love again, there will also be a "Meet Your Next Ex" event on Friday, Feb. 12, and couples that are already committed can reserve brunch on Sunday, Feb. 13 or dinner on Valentine's Day here.
